Fiji

Sunday 4 December 2005

Enjoyed our last morning in Fiji and had a pleasant flight back to Auckland. We booked in to the same motel near the airport because we arrived at 11pm NZ time. The hotel has internet that works so we are able to catch the blog up to date.

We enjoyed a restful day swimming, walking and reading. In the evening the villagers came to the resort and brewed cava for the guests to drink and then they danced (traditional and also with the guests) and sang for us which was wonderful. The harmony was fantastic.

Of course there was no TV or newspaper or internet that worked so we just relaxed and did many of the activities offered like snorkling, picnicking, swimming etc and there were many more activities offered that we did not have time to do like boating, island hopping, diving, visit to the zoo etc.

We had a pleasant early morning flight to Nadi (3 hours in the air with breakfast served) and were delighted to be greeted by musicians singing and dancing in traditional costume to welcome us on landing. Our 40 minute drive to Sea Shell Cove was quaint and Fiji reminded us so much of Malawi. The scruffy town of Nadi was just like Blantyre and the roads to our spot were narrow tarmac or rough dirt and all along the way were cheerful and happy people waving and smiling. It is all very green with mango and paw paw trees laden and growing wild and palm trees and coconuts and straw huts everywhere. Our 'resort' was absolutely delightful. A natural cove, totally remote and unspoiled with gas for cooking and creek water for washing and rain water for drinking. We were booked into a private room for two off the backpacker dormitory but we discovered that for $20 more we could upgrade to a Bure which is a one bedroom cottage on its own right by the shore with a wonderful verandah and view of the ocean.

Landed in Auckland and took a motel room five minutes from the airport and slept off some jet lag. We had to rise at 4:30am to catch an early flight to Fiji.
